Overview

Mustang, often called the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," is a realm where time seems to have stood still, offering travelers a rare glimpse into an ancient and spiritually rich Himalayan world. Located between the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, this mystical land was once a vital part of the old trans-Himalayan salt trade route and still holds the secrets of its Tibetan-influenced culture, deep-rooted spiritual practices, and timeless mountain communities. This 10-day journey to Mustang is more than just a scenic adventure—it is a deep immersion into Nepal's cultural and spiritual soul. From the bustling streets and sacred stupas of Kathmandu to the serene alleys of Marpha and the spiritually charged air of Muktinath, each day unveils a new layer of beauty and meaning. You’ll explore ancient Bon monasteries in Lubra, witness rituals that have been passed down for centuries, walk beside turquoise lakes and fossil-rich rivers, and meet the resilient Thakali people who thrive in these rugged landscapes. Whether soaking in natural hot springs in Tatopani, learning about yak farming near Kagbeni, or simply breathing in the high mountain air, this trip offers an unforgettable blend of natural splendor, cultural discovery, and spiritual awakening—making Mustang not just a destination, but a transformative experience.

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Nepal! As you step out of Tribhuvan International Airport, the crisp air carries the scent of incense and the hum of Himalayan mystique. Our team will greet you warmly and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel — Kathmandu’s vibrant heart, filled with colorful shops, lively cafés, and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze.

Spend your evening wandering these streets, sipping on local tea or trying your first momos (Nepali dumplings). Let the rhythm of Kathmandu welcome you gently.

Overnight in Kathmandu

Included: Airport pickup and accommodation

Day 2

Start your day with a visit to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the world’s largest spherical stupas. Join the morning chanting session inside a nearby monastery as the lamas' deep voices reverberate through incense-swirled air.

Continue to the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, where life and death intertwine along the Bagmati River, with sadhus meditating and rituals ongoing. Then rise above the valley to Swayambhunath Stupa, or the Monkey Temple, for sweeping city views and fluttering prayer flags.

Optional: Join us for a traditional welcome dinner with live Nepali folk music.

Overnight in Kathmandu

Included: Breakfast, guided tour

Optional: Welcome dinner

Day 3

Take a short but breathtaking flight west to Pokhara, Nepal’s city of lakes and mountains. The Annapurna range greets you with snowy peaks.

Tour highlights include the mysterious Gupteshwor Cave, thunderous Davis Falls, and a tranquil boating experience on Phewa Lake, where reflections of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) shimmer in the water.

Overnight in Pokhara

Included: Flight, sightseeing, accommodation with breakfast and dinner

Day 4

The road to the Himalayas begins. Drive through terraced fields, roaring rivers, and rustic settlements. Pause for tea at Tatopani Hot Springs, where local stories and steam mingle in the air.

Your destination is Marpha, a picturesque Thakali village famed for its apple orchards and whitewashed alleys. Wander through cobbled paths, visit a traditional apple brandy distillery, and witness how this fruit shapes life and economy in Mustang.

Overnight in Marpha

Day 5

Ascend to Muktinath Temple (3,800m), a site sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Pilgrims bathe under 108 sacred water taps seeking purification, and the eternal flame of Jwala Mai Temple burns steadily, symbolizing divine presence.

Then descend into time at Lubra Village, the last Bon village in Mustang. Bon is Tibet’s ancient pre-Buddhist spiritual tradition. Meet the head monk, join an evening chanting ritual, and visit the Lubra School, where students learn both Tibetan and modern subjects.

Dinner is a traditional Bon-style meal served with stories under a starry Himalayan sky.

Overnight in Lubra Village Homestay

Day 6

After a hearty breakfast, drive to Thini Village, believed to be the first settlement of the Thakali Kingdom. Visit the hilltop monastery and chat with villagers who preserve age-old customs.

Hike to Dhumba Lake, a tranquil glacial gem where turquoise water reflects the sky. Nearby, the Dhumba Monasteryoffers a peaceful break with mountain vistas.

Continue to the base of Elephant Mountain, a sacred rock formation believed to protect the region. End the day in Jomsom, where you’ll embark on a fossil walk along the Kali Gandaki River, searching for Shaligrams, ancient ammonites revered as symbols of Lord Vishnu.

Overnight in Jomsom

Included: Guided tour, hike, monastery visit, fossil walk, accommodation with breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7

Begin with a morning hike to Titi Lakes, nestled among rhododendrons and rare mountain flora. These lakes are revered as sacred and said to hold spiritual energy.

Visit the Bon Monastery near Kagbeni, home to young monks who study ancient texts. Interact with them at the school and hostel—see the future of Bon in their laughter and recitations.

Stop at a local yak farm where you’ll learn how yak milk is turned into butter, cheese, and yoghurt—staples of highland life.

Unwind with an afternoon soak in the Tatopani Hot Springs, a perfect balm for weary legs and a fitting ritual for the final mountain day.
